Island Runners on the front foot at Strangford

ISLAND Runners members participated in the Strangford 10k and 5k road races yesterday.

The nine athletes, from Loughinisland GAC, performed admirably at the event which attracted over 300 participants.

Some runners were taking part in their first official race and congratulations to them for completing a challenging race which included a tough, early climb.

Jenny McLeigh was the bravest taking on the 10k and crossed the line with an admirable time of 56.13.

The other eight took part in the 5k race and did well in a 167-strong field.

Hugh Carville was the first club member home and came in 28th overall, with a chip time of 24.49 in his first race in over two years, followed just six places later by Lee Campbell with a impressive time of 25.31.

Sarah Murray came in third for the club and in 60th place with a good time of 28.41.

It was close between Martin Keenan, Seamus Fay and Lenka Killen as just seconds separated the trio as they approached the finishing line.

Island Runners captain Martin finished in the top half of the race and just over the half hour mark at 30.25.

Club chairman Seamus, who did a fantastic time during his first run in a decade, finished 90th and came in just 11 seconds later at 30.36.

Lenka, who is just back running after having a baby recently, was six seconds behind with a fine showing at 30.41.

John Killen, who has only started running this year, finished with a good time of 33.51 while Lisa Lawlor came in with a battling 37.43.
